ASSAULT ADVISORY
Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer
at Charlotte CI

PUNTA GORDA - An inmate attacked a correctional officer at Charlotte Correctional Institution Monday morning.

Inmate Terry Grimes attacked Sgt. James Hansen at approximately 9:00 am. Inmate Grimes was ordered to stop loitering at the canteen line and told to return to the recreation yard. Inmate Grimes made a verbal threat and refused to obey Sgt. Hansen's order. Sgt. Hansen approached inmate Grimes to place him in hand constraints. Inmate Grimes refused to cooperate and pulled out a toothbrush that had been sharpened to a point. Inmate Grimes began swinging the weapon at Sgt. Hansen, striking him once on his forearm and a second time on his forehead.

Additional staff arrived to assist Sgt. Hansen and the inmate was secured on the ground. Prison medical staff examined the officer, who went to a local hospital for further examination.

Inmate Grimes is serving a twelve year sentence for battery in Brevard County. The Department of Corrections will recommend to the state attorney's office that he be charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
