In a presentation this afternoon, Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Michael W. Moore presented a $16,500 check to the American Red Cross to assist with disaster relief efforts in New York City and Washington D.C.
The money collected is the result of a one day fundraiser sponsored by the Foundation for Partnerships in Correctional Excellence. DOC employees from across the state donated money.
"This fundraiser is an example of what the foundation is doing," said Secretary Moore. "It reflects the values and generosity of DOC employees who are always willing to lend a helping hand."
The foundation is a not-for-profit direct support organization (DSO) for DOC and supports the programs, personnel, and services of the department in the interest of public safety through grants, contributions, and community partnerships.
On average, the foundation raises $6,000 per fund raiser to assist DOC employees in times of financial need and other non-profit organizations.
