Murder Suspect Identified
on DOC Website

Tallahassee - Secretary of Corrections Michael W. Moore said today a murderer is in custody because of the Florida Department of Corrections' website, which maintains a database of inmates and supervised offenders.

This week, Moore received an e-mail from Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department Detective William Martin hailing the Florida DOC website.

Martin said a search of the website allowed him to identify a suspect in a 1999 Kansas City murder, who was living in Florida under an alias. Martin told DOC staff that his department developed and verified the information on the suspect at 9:00 a.m. on June 5, and the suspect was in custody in Florida by 3:00 p.m. that day.

"I wish all states had a similar website with as much detailed information," Martin said. Secretary Moore said the Florida DOC website is a tremendous resource for law enforcement and for the public.

"Our website has been recognized with a number of awards," Moore said, "but it's great to learn first hand that it was key in apprehending a murder suspect.

"Governor Bush is a staunch supporter of our efforts to better protect the public through use of advanced technology. The term 'we've always done it that way' doesn't work in today's world, and the vision Governor Bush demonstrates gives us the ability to continue improving our resources in order to do a better job," Moore said.
