Memo to:Members of the Press
From:Sterling Ivey, Public Affairs Director
Date:January 31, 2002
Subject:Press Witnesses for Linroy Bottoson and Robert Trease

Death Row inmate Linroy Bottoson has declined any interviews with the press prior to his scheduled execution by lethal injection at 6:00 pm on February 5 at Florida State Prison (FSP). Death row inmate Robert Trease has also declined any interviews with press prior to his scheduled execution by lethal injection at 6:00 pm on February 7 at FSP.

Press witnesses and reporters covering the executions must park their vehicles in the press staging area across the road from FSP at all times. Please do not enter the grounds of FSP. Press witnesses for the executions must meet me in the staging area at 5:00 pm. Department personnel will transport press witnesses from the media staging area into the prison.

The press witness list will be closed at 12:00 noon on Monday, February 4, 2002 for both executions. You must call the public affairs office (850/488-0420) with any substitutions, including substitute alternatives. No substitutions will be accepted after this deadline.

Press witnesses will be provided with note-taking materials prior to the execution. No cell phones, pagers or pocketknives are allowed inside FSP. Witnesses must dress appropriately. No tank tops, t-shirts, shorts or sandals may be worn. Witnesses must carry photo identification. Everyone is subject to search before entering FSP.

Reporters interested in the condemned inmate's crime, trial, appeals or his life in general are urged to research those issues in advance. DOC may not be able to answer press inquiries that are not directly related to his stay on Death Row or the execution process.

For a description of execution by lethal injection, including the chemicals used, refer to the Florida Supreme Court's opinion in Sims vs. Florida, March 3, 2000, page 19, footnote 17. It can be found at (go to press page, then to Supreme Court press information, then to archived documents.)

Directions to FSP are on our website at or under Facilities/Region 2.
