A portion of State Road 16 is being dedicated in honor of Correction Officers that have fallen in the line of duty. The section of the highway being dedicated stretches from the northwest city limits of Starke, FL in Bradford County on State Road 16 to its intersection with State Road 121 in Union County. This section of the highway is home to Union and New River Correctional Facilities and the Florida State Prison - which together house close to 5,000 inmates.
There have been twenty-seven correctional officers that have died while in the line of duty since 1928. "The Department of Corrections greatly appreciates the dedication of this highway for the fallen officers. I would like to thank Senator Smith, Representative Bean and the Department of Transportation for recognizing the dedication and commitment of the men and women that serve in supervising currently 77,000 inmates. The Memorial Highway is a constant way to honor those officers who surrendered their lives while protecting Floridians," said Secretary James Crosby.
