Thank You From Secretary Crosby
to Staff After Hurricanes
I have been deeply moved by the efforts of our employees in response to the two hurricanes we have experienced recently.
Many of you have been working day and night since the threat of Hurricane Charley. Sadly, some lost their homes and others lost possessions while burdening a concern for friends and loved ones. I realize the personal sacrifices you have made and the state of Florida is fortunate to have so many dedicated, professional employees in the Department of Corrections.
During Hurricanes Charley and Frances, we moved over 8,000 inmates in a matter of hours. Many offices and institutions suffered major damage. Yet, our probation officers immediately began working in damaged areas to ensure offender accountability. Institutional staff, often on generator power and limited communications, held steadfast. While most Floridians will not completely understand or realize what you have accomplished in the last four weeks, I certainly do.
We can be proud to say the public was never in jeopardy because of your actions and dedication. You have not forsaken our number one priority - public safety. I am forever grateful to those employees who worked tirelessly throughout our state to maintain our operations, and for the many phone calls received by central office from staff across the state asking how they could be of service. The character of people becomes very apparent in an emergency and we can be proud of where we stand.
Your dedication and planning has ensured a quick recovery and, again, thank you for your service.
