Department of Corrections K-9 Units assist in recapturing Putnam County Jail escapees
who are subsequently charged with murder, home invasion and car theft
K-9 units from Baker Correctional Institution (CI), Union CI and Reception and Medical Center helped search for two escaped inmates from the Putnam County Jail who were recaptured Saturday, April 18 after four days on the lam.
The step grandmother of one of the escapees, Helen Googe, was later found dead in Bardin, Florida. Her home was robbed and her car stolen, and the two escapees are being charged with her death, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s office.
The two suspects, Timothy Wane Fletcher and Doni Ray Brown, are back in custody at the Putnam County Jail and are expected to be charged with murder, home invasion robbery and car theft, according to Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy.
A local resident told the Baker CI K-9 Team she had observed the two suspects running north in a field near State Road 17 and Greenville Road, and the Baker CI K-9 Team and Putnam County deputies established a trail there and began tracking the escapees. Moments later, a perimeter officer advised that they had first one, then both suspects in custody about 300 yards in front of the K-9 Team.
Department of Corrections K-9 Teams stand ready to assist local law enforcement when needed, and we average more than one a call a day statewide for assistance with fleeing felons, lost elderly and missing children. Congratulations to Baker CI K-9 Sgt. S. Stewart, CO J. Yates, CO J. Baglin and K-9 Brandi, along with Union CI K-9 Sgt. J. Polk, and COs S. Henley and R. Wilkison; and RMC K-9 Sgt. B. Adams and CO T. Rimes on another job well done.
