Reporters are invited to Okaloosa Correctional Institution by Warden Alan Pippin to attend their Re-Entry Development Conference on Thursday, October 15, 2009 beginning at 6 p.m.
The Florida Department of Corrections’ mission includes the successful re-entry of prison inmates back into society, further ensuring public safety by producing law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. Okaloosa CI has enthusiastically embraced this initiative by providing numerous programs to its inmates through partnerships with the inmate’s families, local churches and community organizations.
The conference will include a light meal, a summary of Okaloosa’s re-entry initiative, and a musical presentation followed by an overview on existing classes from the volunteers who teach these programs. Subjects will include Self Esteem (Thomas Dugan), Parenting (William Tuccio), Reducing Criminal Thinking (William Schwalb), Faith-Based Substance Abuse counseling (Dudley Hunt and Larry Webb), Financial Management (James Cox), and Okaloosa CI’s Toastmasters Gavel Club (Sharon Johnson, Kathy Morrow and Leigh Shirah). An inmate’s response to re-entry will also be featured.
Currently one of every three inmates released from prison returns within three years, costing Florida taxpayers about $20,000 a year to incarcerate them. Our re-entry initiative seeks to assist inmates with finding jobs, getting treatment, obtaining an education, and learning job skills so they become productive citizens upon release.
Reporters who wish to attend should contact Communications Director Gretl Plessinger at (850) 488-0420.
Location: Okaloosa Correctional Institution Training Building at 3189 Little Silver Road, Crestview, FL 32539. (Phone: 850.682.0931.)
