Investigation launched into Inmate Beating at Union Correctional Institution

Raiford, Florida - Department of Corrections Secretary Walt McNeil has ordered his Inspector General’s Office to launch a full investigation into allegations of the beating of an inmate at Union Correctional Institution (UCI) in Raiford, Florida over a two-day period. The abuse allegedly occurred on Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16.

“I intend to bring the full resources of this agency to bear on the individuals responsible for this violent assault, including prosecution, termination and decertification, so they can never work in a correctional environment again. There is no place in our profession for this depraved mindset,” said Secretary Walt McNeil.

The inmate has multiple injuries and is being treated at an outside hospital.  He is a 47-year-old white male.

Four UCI correctional officers and two sergeants have been placed on leave pending results of the investigation.  In addition one contract and three temporary nurses were terminated for failure to report the abuse.

The incident came to light when a Department employee reported the injuries.

“I’m grateful to this employee for acting appropriately in reporting this horrendous incident,” said Secretary McNeil.

This incident remains under investigation. Under Secretary McNeil's direction, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting in this investigation.
