WHO: Inmates at Dade Correctional Institution. Dade C.I. is an adult male facility located in Miami Dade. It currently houses 1659 inmates ranging in custody from close to community.
WHY: The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program was founded by Senator Frederica Wilson in an attempt to help young men become role models for their peers and become positive, productive members of society. Part of the program consists of a prison visit, during which a select group of inmates share their stories and speak about how their bad choices got them to where they are today. This program initially was to help the children who visit to see what life could be like if they choose the wrong road. The program has become an incentive to the inmates who participate because it has led them on a path of self betterment, responsibility, ownership and growth.
