12/10/10 Groundbreaking for RMC's Cancer Treatment Center

As most of you know, we lost another one of our own this week.

South Florida Correctional Officer Ciara Lee was murdered Tuesday around 1 a.m. in Miami, along with her two-year-old son Devin. They died from rifle fire that sprayed their house as they slept. Other family members in the house were injured as well. There have been no arrests.

Ciara was a housing officer, supervising inmates in a dormitory, and she’d been with us about a year. In fact, tomorrow would have been her first year anniversary.  She was well liked by staff and was known for her smile and sense of humor. The light of her life, as you might expect, was her young son.

This is the second murder of a Correctional Officer from South Florida Reception Center this year, and I know staff is hurting.  In October, SFRC Correctional Officer Rhonda Mickens-Williams, was stabbed to death and her husband was subsequently charged with her murder. Our hearts go out to the family members of these officers, as well as our staff who are trying to cope with this latest tragedy.

We have counselors available to staff if needed. Please take advantage of their expertise at this difficult time.

I’ll leave you with this final thought from Warden Harris: ``She is remembered by co-workers as having brought a bright, positive nature to a difficult and dangerous job. Those who knew her describe her wonderful warm smile and say that her radiant spirit always seemed to light up the room.''

May she and her son rest in peace.
