Statement from Secretary McNeil regarding Lancaster C.I. Incident
I want to inform you of a situation involving an inmate this week at Lancaster Correctional Institution. On Monday, May 24, a male inmate was exercising as part of the extended day program at that prison when he collapsed. Medical personnel immediately responded to stabilize the inmate and called an ambulance. That inmate is in the hospital in critical condition. Staff from the institutional level on up including me are heartsick about what happened and we are, of course, taking a close look at what happened.
This is what I know right now.
The inmate was transferred to Lancaster, a youthful offender prison in Trenton on Monday. Upon arrival, as part of the institutional reception process, he and other inmates were given a brief medical evaluation. These inmates had lunch and following lunch, they reported to the recreational yard to participate in an exercise program. At some point during the exercise, the inmate indicated he could no longer do the exercise and asked for medical assistance. The officer called for the medical team and the inmate collapsed.
Three medical staff responded, put the inmate on a stretcher, began icing him down and called an ambulance.
There is no indication of a crime having been committed, but because of the serious nature of this incident, the Governor’s Office has requested that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conduct a preliminary investigation. The Department’s Inspector General’s Office will fully cooperate and assist.
