Nine-County Law Enforcement Strike Team Targets Gang and Violent Offenders: Nets 92 Criminal Charges, 65 Arrests and the Seizure of 8 Weapons

CENTRAL FLORIDA – A strike team of 53 law enforcement agencies in nine Central Florida and Treasure Coast counties made surprise face-to-face contact with hundreds of probationers including gang members and violent felons during the late evening hours of Wednesday, July 28. As a result, 65 offenders were arrested and 8 weapons were taken off the streets.

The strike team of probation officers, deputies and local police officers are part of the Region Five “Community Justice Coalition,” which began as a three-county initiative in 2007 and has conducted nine such sweeps since, resulting in numerous arrests and the removal of weapons and drugs from the hands of convicted felons on probation. Law enforcement agencies from Brevard, Indian River, Lake, Martin, Orange, Osceola, St. Lucie, Seminole and Volusia counties were involved in Wednesday’s operation.

In addition to gang members, the strike team targets probationers with a history of robbery, sexual battery, drug trafficking, aggravated battery and homicide. They visit the homes of these violent felons and conduct walk throughs of their residences to ensure that they are complying with their conditions of probation. A full search of the residence is conducted, when necessary, and the computers of sex offenders are searched for pornography.

“Last night, this strike team removed a number of drugs and weapons from the streets, and they arrested numerous violent convicted felons who continue to choose a life of crime over compliance with the terms of their probation,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Walt McNeil. “There’s no question law abiding citizens can rest a little easier, and probationers have been put on notice that if they don’t follow the rules, they’re going to jail.”

This operation resulted in the seizure of 8 weapons, assorted types of narcotics (0.1gm cocaine, 41.1gm marijuana, 67 Xanax pills, 20 Oxycotin pills, 60 pills Oxycodone), assorted drug paraphernalia, and $3,311 in cash.

Law enforcement knocked on the doors of more than 607 offenders and served outstanding warrants on 18 offenders who had violated the terms of their probation. In addition, 65 probationary offenders were taken into custody for criminal violations discovered during the sweep, and 15 non-probation offenders were also arrested, totaling 80 physical arrests, totaling 92 criminal charges.

As a result of this operation, there were 11 gang-related arrests. Additional arrests may occur over the next several days based on information gained during the sweep.
