Department of Corrections to Close Glades CI
Tallahassee — The Florida Department of Corrections announced it will close Glades Correctional Institution in Belle Glade, which will save $23 million dollars. This closure will not result in the early release of inmates. Employees will be afforded the opportunity to fill vacancies at other facilities and the inmates will be relocated to other facilities.
“The decision to close Glades Correctional Institution has come after months of thought and research,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ken Tucker. “The Department made every effort to keep the facility open.”
Glades CI is an older facility, built in 1932, and was not funded in the Department of Corrections budget.
The Glades CI phase out plan will begin immediately with a target completion date of December 1, 2011. The date was chosen so that Glades employees have the opportunity to continue to work in the region at a private partner facility. Also employees can choose to remain with the Department filling vacancies at other Florida prisons.
