Century C.I. Correctional Officer Serving in Afghanistan Awarded Medal, Badge
A Correctional Officer who is currently assigned to a NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan was recently awarded a medal and badge for helping combat an insurgent attack in Kabul.
US Army Sergeant Chester Tolbert, who is a Correctional Officer at Century Correctional Institution when he’s stateside, helped defeat a multiphase attack in which insurgents used small-arms and improvised explosive devices to attack the British Council Building, a base located in a relatively upscale area of the country’s capital used for education and to help Afghanistan’s civilian community. Although no US service members were harmed, 12 people died in the attack. Command Task Force Yankee Army Brig. Gen. John Hammond presented Tolbert with the Joint Service Achievement Medal and a combat action badge. Tolbert has been a part of the Corrections family at Century CI since May 2008.
The Department of Corrections currently has 82 staff members on active duty in the military, 40 of whom are deployed overseas. This week our Corrections Foundation sent holiday greeting cards and Walmart gift cards to the families of our deployed military to remind them how much we appreciate their sacrifices.
