Law Enforcement Coalition Targets Their "Top Ten"

State Probation Officers and 45 law enforcement agencies from eleven counties teamed together in a joint operation throughout the month of April. Their goal was to make surprise face-to-face contact with hundreds of probationers including gang members, sex offenders, and violent felons. All teams visited offenders who were considered the areas “Top Ten” meaning they were known to be, or strongly suspected of being, in non-compliance with the terms of their supervision. Many of the law enforcement teams took advantage of the combined resources and paid visits to many more than their top ten. Some counties attempted to make contact with almost 150 offenders in a single evening.

As a result of these combined efforts, 54 arrests were made, 10 weapons and seven firearms were taken off the streets, and almost 80 grams of drugs and assorted paraphernalia were seized.

The counties that participated in the operation are part of the “Community Justice Coalition which began as a three-county initiative in 2007. There have been 13 previous operations resulting in numerous arrests and the removal of weapons and drugs from the hands of convicted felons on probation. Law enforcement agencies from Brevard, Indian River, Lake, Marion, Martin, Orange, Osceola, Polk, St. Lucie, Seminole, and Volusia counties were involved in this latest operation.

The teams of probation and law enforcement officers visited the homes of these violent felons and conducted walk through visual inspections of their residences to ensure that they are complying with their conditions of probation. During the operation, one team discovered a marijuana “grow house” while others conducted computer searches or executed search warrants. This particular operation also included the added assistance of  K-9 units. They conducted a total of 20 searches.

“This particular operation is the epitome of creative partnerships that yield results.  All the communities impacted by these efforts of the probation officers and local law enforcement officers should be proud and feel more safe,” said Department of Corrections Secretary Ken Tucker. “This is dedication, plain and simple.”

Additional arrests may occur over the next several days based on further investigation and information gained during the sweep.
