In the two years that have followed the murder of Sergeant Ruben Thomas, we have mourned the loss of one of our own while considering ourselves blessed for having been associated with him. Sergeant Thomas is still very much missed by his family at home as well as his co-workers at Columbia Correctional Institution (CI). “Never Forgotten” is the theme for this year’s service as we strive to do our best to express our never ending devotion to the memory for Sergeant Thomas and what he gave to all who knew him. His loss will be forever felt in the Department of Corrections family. Secretary Michael Crews will be speaking and Sergeant Thomas’ family will be in attendance. The service is open to the public.
As Florida's largest state agency, the Department of Corrections employs more than 22,000 members statewide, oversees more than 100,000 inmates and supervises nearly 146,000 offenders in the community.
